Penguin Prison - Fair Warning

"I can't help it any more"

When is the Penguin Prison album coming out? I feel like I've been waiting for this for years. Each song he releases is consistently amazing, and this is no different. I was obsessed after just one listen. He's got such a knack for mixing cool indie production with lush, instantly hummable hooks. There's so much melody here. In that way, he kind of reminds me of a solo Hall & Oates (in their 80's resurgence). There's nothing out there quite like him right now. This is big glossy pop music masquerading as something only the "cool" bloggers and insiders should know about. In reality, everyone should know about Penguin Prison. This music should be in the top ten, especially come late Summer when this song would sound especially enticing. The album, whenever it's released, is definitely one of my most anticipated of 2011.

The Dirty Disco - White Room

"You are gonna have to treat my mental health"

After the success of Sista!, the Dirty Disco have released the video to their second single, the equally fantastic White Room. I love this band's DIY style. It's all limited budget, sure, but they make the most of it. From the costumes to the performance to the imagery, this is a band who knows exactly where they're going. In a lot of ways, they're like Scissor Sisters' brasher, more in-your-face cousin. Here's hoping they're in store for a similar level of success. Since I'm posting the video above, I thought it would be fun to post a remix below. Only this isn't a normal remix. It's a mash-up of the song with Penguin Prison's brilliant track, The Worse It Gets. Very cool, especially since I posted that song awhile back. The two work surprisingly well together.

Penguin Prison - The Worse It Gets

"The more I look, the worse it gets"

I'm certainly not the first one to write about this track (though I did feature another Penguin Prison song months ago), but I'm going to share it today anyway because it needs to be spread around the blogosphere like crazy. It's that good. Penguin Prison has seemingly come out of nowhere with a bundle of pop songs that border on perfection. This may be his best yet, featuring a dynamite melody over a track that sounds like Hall & Oates circa 1982. If the rest of the album's as good as the four tracks we've heard, this will be quite something. The song's freely downloadable via the soundcloud link below.
On another note, I'm taking off for the UK/Sweden tomorrow morning so posts will be more sporadic for the next two weeks. I'll try to update at least a couple times a week depending on where I am and what I'm doing, so keep checking in!
