Olympic champ Wanjiru on Death threat charges

Olympic marathon champ Sammy Wanjiru has been charged with death threats to his wife and the illegal possession of an AK47 rifle in his native Kenya.

Wanjiru denied the accusations when he appeared before a court in his home town of Nyahururu, Kenyan television reported Thursday. The court was told that the 24-year-old athlete made the threats after an argument with his wife, Tereza Njeri, the previous night.

He was also charged with threatening to kill a domestic helper, and wounding a security guard. Prosecutors alleged that Wanjiru was drunk when he returned home before making the threats.

Wanjiru was held overnight in a police cell and released on bail, with the case set to be heard in full in February.

Wanjiru accomplished worldwide fame when he became Kenya's first Olympic marathon champion at the Beijing Games in 2008. At 21, he was the youngest gold medal winner at an Olympics since 1932.

After his Beijing triumph, Wanjiru has set about dominating the marathon distance, claiming 2 wins in Chicago and also winning the London marathon last year. It helped him to be crowned as the men's champion in the 2009 and 2010 world marathon majors’ series.

Wanjiru is also a twice world half marathon record holder and would be a favorite to defend his Olympic title in London in 2012.

Inter Milan made into World Club Final

Inter Milan eased into the final of the Club World Cup after defeating Asian champions Seongnam Ilhwa 3-0 in Abu Dhabi.

The European champions, who have put great effort to replicate last year's form, when they claimed the Champions League, Italian Serie A title and Italian Cup, will now face African champions TP Mazembe in Saturday's showpiece after this win.

Despite the setback of playmaker Wesley Sneijder limping off injured early in the match, Inter were always in control and took the lead in just the 3rd minute when Dejan Stankovic coolly slotted the ball home from the edge of the area.

And that advantage was doubled in the 32nd minute when same superb interplay between Argentine duo Javier Zanetti and Diego Milito resulted in captain Zanetti sliding the ball past Seongnam goalkeeper Jung Sung-Ryong.

The victory was sealed 17 minutes from time when Milito, making his return to action after 5 weeks on the sidelines, stabbed home a rebound after Samuel Eto'o's shot was parried by Jung.

Spanish Runner Suspended after Doping Charges

Competitive Spanish runner Marta Domínguez, already ensnared in a doping controversy, has been suspended by the Spanish Athletics Federation.

Domínguez, a steeplechase champion, who had also served as vice president of the organization, had been detained on assertions that she was involved in a doping circle.

Domínguez was reportedly among 14 people detained by the Spanish Civil Guard on Thursday as part of the Operation Galgo anti-doping investigation.

Sports doctors, pharmacists, trainers, coaches, representatives and athletes were detained in raids across the country for crimes against public health. Several people involved in Operation Puerto — including Eufemiano Fuentes — were among the suspects.

The Civil Guard raided her Palencia home on Thursday, emerging with a laptop, a briefcase and a box. On the Civil Guard's official report, the initials M.D. are listed as "an athlete and supplier of doping substances." Those initials are the only ones listed concerning raids in Palencia.

According to the Civil Guard, anabolic steroids, hormones, bags of blood, documents relating to doping and other material used for blood transfusions were among the material seized in raids on 15 different residences.

The 35 year old Dominguez was missing out the 2011 season because she's pregnant, but intended to return for the 2012 London Olympics. Dominguez also won the 5,000 meters at the 2002 and '06 European championships. She is one of the most decorated athletes in Spain.

Angry Birds to Land on Game Consoles

Angry Bird's is a mobile game in which birds launch themselves at pigs who stole their eggs. The one of the most successful mobile games in history, is taking its bird-slinging game mechanics to a new platform: the traditional game console.

Rovio, the company behind the popular iPhone and Android game franchise, says that it is working on a version of the game for the Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3.

CEO Peter Vesterbacka also told the BBC that the games would launch next year, although he wouldn't reveal much more beyond that.

Vesterbacka also revealed a second piece of news: the company is actively working on "Angry Birds 2." The new game isn't a sequel to the original though, but is instead a completely new game featuring the angry birds and the evil pigs.

As for the premise of the game, Vesterbacka told the BBC that, "the pigs will be a lot more active than just being slingshotted at by birds."

He also added that there will be a lot more of the pigs in "Angry Birds 2."

Rare Parrot Species discovered in Western Australia

A new, critically endangered species of ground parrot has been identified in Western Australia by a team of Australian researchers involving DNA experts from the University of Adelaide.

The discovery makes the western ground parrot one of the world's rarest parrots, with just over 100 birds remaining in one known location in Cape Arid National Park on the state's south-west coast.

The team, led by Australian Wildlife Conservancy's Dr Stephen Murphy, used DNA from 27 museum specimens some up to 160 years old to reveal that populations of ground parrots in eastern and western Australia are highly distinct from each other and that the western populations should be recognized as a new species, Pezoporus flaviventris.

Dr Murphy analysed tissue, skin and blood samples in a Darwin laboratory, working with researchers in Canberra, Adelaide and Western Australia to identify 35 genetic differences between western ground parrots and a similar species found in coastal areas of eastern Australia and Tasmania.

"The Western Ground parrot has declined rapidly in the last 20 years, there are now only about 110 birds surviving in the wild and most of these are confined to a single national park. It is now one of the world's rarest birds," Murphy added.
