MARS IS ALL WET

Well, not all wet, but (after about 67 days on the surface of the planet) lab tests on board Phoenix have confirmed water-ice two inches below the surface of Mars, and a panoramic image indicates water-ice all around.

The Automatic - Responsible Citizen

"I'm going out of my way to go out of my mind"

I had Automatic's debut cd--bought it for Monster, like I'm sure everyone else did. I saw them live two times when I was in England. Yet, I pretty much forgot all about them when the year was over (as did everyone else). Well, they've got a new sound and a new album coming out, and I've gotta say that even with just one listen I am very impressed. They've got a bigger, glossier sound with huge choruses that manage to sidestep the novelty of Monster. I'm not sure if it will be enough to reestablish themselves in the minds of listeners, but I certainly like it. Responsible Citizen opens the album in bombastic form. I wish them well with this, because I think it is far superior to what they produced in the past.

JELLYFISH

Jellyfish
has moments of wit, humor, hope, joy, fantasy and beauty.

The rest of the film presents a bleak picture of unpleasant and struggling people in a bleak landscape of rundown parts of Israel.

Almost no-one is nice to anyone else, and bad luck fills in to add misery when people fail to create problems for themselves and each another.

Beginning with a child who mysteriously walks onto the beach, apparently from the sea, and later, just as strangely, disappears, the film follows the (really bad) waitress who finds the child, a Filipino care giver, a couple that just got married, and some other characters who interact with them.

Except for the care giver, who is the one sympathetic character in the film, just about everyone is either a schlemiel, a schmozzle, or both. (Yiddish: The classic definition: A schlemiel is the waiter who slips and drops a bowl of soup in the customer's lap; a schlemozzle is the customer with a lap full of soup.)

The film is well acted, original, was a prize winner at Cannes, and was shown at Lincoln Center in New Films / New Directors.

Nevertheless, its sprinkling of dark humor, buried in a dark vision, is not likely to cheer up most people, or do much for the Israeli tourist industry.

For anyone on a holiday going to the beach and looking for some happy times, perhaps the best advice would be to avoid both jellyfish and Jellyfish.

Marian Rivera is The New Endorser of Facial Care Center

Marian Rivera's status as the country's top young star of today was confirmed by the different recognition and endorsements the young actress is continuously getting.

She is this year's FHM Philippines Most Sexiest, the success of her fantaseryes (Marimar, Dyesebel), she covers almost all local magazines, and a proven effective product endorser.

And just recently, the 23-year-old actress also jumped into the ever-growing list of celebrities who are endorsing firms in the beauty and cosmetics business.

Marian signed up as the new face of Facial Care Centre, endorsing its LaserLight hair removal procedure. The beauty-cosmetic firm previously had Cherie Gil, Carmi Martin, Cristina Gonzales, and Kris Aquino as endorsers.

In a previous interview, the Marian said that her decision to sign up and avail of the service was largely because of her problem with unwanted hair.

"Balbon talaga ako," she shared smiling. She used to shave and apply wax to remove the unwanted fuzz but totally gave up on the two methods that were painful and inconvenient. The LaserLight method, according to Marian, is more practical, effective, and totally painless.

The Faint - Machine In The Ghost

"Let's ask the athiests"

I've always had a love/hate relationship with the Faint. Some of their tracks just floor me (Southern Belles In London Sing is definitely one of them) while others I find to be quite boring. Their newest album, Fasciinatiion, is out soon, and it's pretty much more of the same. I like the lead single and a handful of album, tracks, but they've yet to make an entire album that I love. Doesn't matter too much, though, because they can definitely craft a nice pop song when they want to. Off the new cd, I love Machine In The Ghost. Great beat, great melody and interesting lyrics. It certainly shows off their good side.

Spatial Unity - Knock Me Off My Feet

"Girl you know you knock me right off of my feet"

Spatial Unity is a Scottish band that recalls almost every 80's britpop group imaginable. I am not crazy about the lyrics in this track (in fact, they're pretty dire), but the melody is inescapable. It's just so darn catchy! The song sounds like it was recorded twenty years ago, which in this case is a really good thing. I guess it makes sense, because it seems like the guys in the band were around in the 80's, playing with bands/people like ELO and Ozzy Osbourne. So, if you're looking for some vintage pop/rock, this will be right up your alley.

Angel Locsin and Claudine Barretto Feud, Far From Over

Both ABS-CBN Star Magic and Star Cinema issued official statements about the reconciliation of Angel Locsin and Claudine Barretto, saying all is well now between them after they met on July 23 at the Star Cinema office.

If Star Magic looks more biased to Claudine, it’s because she’s their talent and Angel is managed by someone else. Inspite of this, though, we heard that two days after the reconciliation, Claudine got annoyed again when she heard something about Angel and asked that her taping of “Iisa Pa Lamang” be packed up, a clear indication that she’s still at odds with Angel despite efforts of ABS management to patch things up between them. Also, we heard that in the actual meeting between them, they didn’t agree to reconcile right away as there was an angry exchange of words, making the proceedings drag on until way past midnight. “Matigas ang bawat isa kaya natagalan bago sila napagbati,” says an insider. “At mukhang kahit napagbati na sila, hindi pa rin talaga ayos ang lahat.”

Luis Manzano Doesn't Mind Angel Locsin Doing Sexy Scenes with Her Screen Partners

Luis Manzano is indeed a very good subject to interview. He’s always quick to answer with a smile and doesn’t play coy with questions that would have other stars blurting “no comment” in the blink of an eye especially if it concerns his current flame with actress Angel Locsin.

It is no secret that he and Angel have been seeing each other for close to a year now. Angel has even the won the approval of Luis’s parents. Mom Vilma likes Angel’s “love for her craft at ‘yong pagmamahal niya sa pamilya.” Ate Vi has even given Angel one of her signature handkerchiefs. Meanwhile, dad Edu is all praises for Angel’s influence on his son. “Mabait siya and I like her influence on him. I like her effect on him. There is a tremendous change in how I see him now and he is more responsible.

As for the controversy between Angel and Claudine Barretto, Luis chooses to steer clear of the issue. “I would prefer to keep quiet. I don’t think there is something I can say about it.” But he does clarify that Angel is not the type to throw a hissy fit and pick a fight. “In the length of time we have been together, I have [gotten to] know her a lot. ‘Di siya ‘yong tipong nagtatantrums. She is not capable of doing it.” Luis went so far as giving a tongue-in-cheek reply. “Ah, oo nga. May ginilitan na nga siya ng leeg, may sinaksak ng dalawang tao ‘yan. Sa awa ng Diyos mga buhay pa naman sila ngayon.

When asked how he felt about Angel doing kissing and love scenes. “Pareho kaming hindi nagpapakialaman. It’s Angel’s profession. Should I worry about it? Just think of my mom. How many guys has she kissed or had a bed scene with? Mga 30 ba? I just couldn’t be so shallow about these things. We have both grown up a lot.”

ABS-CBN to Get Dingdong Dantes at All Cost?

There are reports that ABS-CBN is giving Dingdong Dantes an offer that he can’t refuse.

Dingdong Dantes is very visible nowadays on various tv commercials, billboards and magazine covers. His fantaserye on GMA opposite Marian Rivera is still the no. 1 tv program nationwide. He is also busy doing a movie with Marian and Iza Calzado. To top it all, he is now one of the hottest properties of GMA 7.

Earlier this year, Richard Gutierrez was rumored of having offered by ABS-CBN a “sky-high” amount just to be a kapamilya. Although Richard had a misunderstanding with GMA at that time, he sealed his loyalty to the kapuso network.

Now, it’s Dingdong’s turn to have the same issue. Dingdong can be considered as one of the top 3 leading men of the Kapuso network together with Richard Gutierrez and Dennis Trillo. His love team with Marian Rivera became a sensation that dominated the tv ratings game. If Dingdong will leave GMA, “mapipilayan” ang network.

If ever the reports are true, the question “loyalty or money” will be put on spotlight once again. Will another bite the dust?

Ben Chan Denies Favoritism in the Bench Blackout Event

"Walang sapawan. Lahat sila bida!" says Ben Chan, owner of the world famous clothing line Bench, on the issue of favoritism in the just concluded Bench Blackout denim and underwear show.

In an interview by GMA News, Ben explained that they don’t take side with anybody and that they are a family.

All of them have done a moment of their own,” he added.

The favoritism issue started when Annabelle Rama complaint that his son Richard [Gutierrez] made no impact with the impact because there has been no proper introduction when the latter entered the ramp compared to other stars like Sam Milby, Rafael Rosell and Dingdong Dantes. Furthermore, she did not like the dark make up that they put on Richard that is why the actor turned out to be just one of those models and did not receive louder cheers than Dingdong Dantes and other stars.

Dingdong had a special moment last Saturday wherein he stripped-off his pants exposing a lot of skin to the delight of the audience.

And what is Ben’s explanation to “Dingdong’s moment”? He’s the newest underwear endorser of Bench, no more no less.

Sneaky Sound System - When We Were Young

"What you gonna do when you cross that line?"

Sneaky Sound System just released their second album in Australia. I've been on the fence with these guys for awhile now and the new material doesn't really change that. They are a good pop/dance group, for sure, but I find that a lot of their stuff sounds too similar. Still, they're very fun and great for the summer. When We Were Young (not to be confused with the superior Galvatrons track) starts off with a catchy chanting verse before segueing into a hypnotic chorus. My favorite track on the new record, though, is definitely the single Kansas City, which is the band's best song to date.

Ryan Agoncilla To Host a New Game Show on ABC-5

TV host-actor Ryan Agoncillo is back on ABC-5. He is set to host a new game show called 50 Seconds to Fame.

Although there is no definite date yet on when the new game show will start airing, but, Ryan already taped a few episodes of the show.

Report says that Ryan will also host a reality talent show in the restructured Cojuangco TV station.

Would this mean that Ryan is no longer a Kapamilya?

Kapamilya fans has no reason to worry about, according to Ryan "Hindi ko iiwan ang ABS-CBN. Kumbaga, may dumating na offer at wala pa naman akong ginagawa sa Channel 2. Nagpaalam naman ako ng maayos at pinayagan, kaya walang isyu at walang problema rito."

It will be remembered that Ryan used to host ABC-5's Philippine Idol in 2006.

Richard Gutierrez Will No Longer Renew Contract with Bench; Annabelle Cries "Unfair" about Richard's Exposure in Bench "Blackout" Event

Annabelle Rama is seriously considering not to renew Richard Gutierrez's contract with Bench.

According to her, Richard was given an unfair exposure in the Blackout event of Bench last Friday, July 25, at the Araneta Coliseum.

Somehow, those who witnessed the event were given the signal that it would be Sam Milby, Rafael Rosell, and Dingdong Dantes who will be approaching the ramp. These three actors got the biggest applause compared to what Richard got from the crowd.

Nasa malapit na sila ng stage ha, paano pa yung nasa bleacher?" said Annabelle in an interview.

It was explained to Annabelle that it never happened to any Bench event that they announced the name of stars who will be doing the ramp.

It was later learned that Dingdong was given a separate time for rehearsal because nobody sees him doing the rehearsals.

In this line, someone asked if he'll put again Richard in the next event of Bench which will happen two years from now.

"Ay hindi na, tatanggalin ko na siya sa Bench!" answered a very disappointed Annabelle.

Angel Locsin and Claudine Barretto on the Buzz' "Intriga Uncensored"

Boy Abunda drilled down on The Buzz the reported rift between the Kapamilya actresses Angel Locsin and Claudine Barretto.

PINOY IDOL Update: Penelope Was Kicked Off of Pinoy Idol Top 7

16 year old Pinoy Idol hopeful Penelope was kicked off of the competition on Sunday night, July 27. She was joined by Kid Camaya and Warren Antig in the bottom three.

Next week, the Top 6 will be mentored by Basil Valdez. And there are reports that GMA-7 is cooking a “twist” in the Pinoy franchise of the famous American Idol. Is this twist some sort of a move from GMA management to save the deteriorating show from getting "The Worst Local Franchise Ever" Award? Is it a “wildcard” that could bring back talent and not just the face in the show?

Let us wait and see.

Lost – Season 3 Review

US Airdate: October 4th 2006- May 23rd 2007 on ABC.

It’s the third season and for the gang it finally means knowing more about The Others as they have Jack, Kate and Sawyer in their clutches. With the remaining survivors manning a rescue and more deaths along the way, things continue to get very interesting for the islanders.

Friend And /Or Foe? – Like many shows out there, Lost suffered the difficult second album syndrome with an incredibly disjointed and all over the place second season. Although Season Three would come to the show’s strongest season yet, it’s not entirely impervious to faults.

In fact opening episode, “A Tale Of Two Cities” continued the tradition of just downright boring Jack centric episodes. In flashbacks Jack’s divorcing his wife Sarah and behaving like a jerk to his irritating father. On the island he’s been sweet talked by a female Other named Juliet. You don’t have to be blind to see that immediately Juliet is attracted to Jack and is even a bit hurt when Jack makes a piss poor effort to use her to escape. Also when we’re not learning that Henry Gale is actually Benjamin Linus, Sawyer’s getting the shit kicked out of him by everyone and Kate is put to work. The first six episodes of the season are built around this. However there are some breaks in the story. For instance we get to see a more duplicitous side to Sun via flashback in the excellent “The Glass Ballerina”. Sun even manages to kill an Other in Colleen, something which Colleen’s husband makes Sawyer pay for repeatedly in “Every Man For Himself” and “I Do”. “Further Instructions” on the other hand is one of two genuinely boring episodes, even though this one is a Locke centric episode. There’s a nice return of Boone but with the introduction of two of the most pointless characters in Nikki and Paolo, it’s hard to get completely invested in the episode.

The other woeful episode of the season is “Stranger In A Strange Land”. It’s another Jack episode (which unfairly gets four episodes this season) but it’s so bland, I just wished they hadn’t bothered with it. Also because this season cannot go a few episodes without the death of a major character, it’s Mr Eko who becomes smoke monster fodder in the disappointing “The Cost Of Living”. Given how much time the writers had spent building up Mr Eko as a strong player, his death in this episode is both lazy and cartoonish to say the least. However despite some sluggish stuff at the start, there is a lot to recommend. Locke trying to involve some of the characters in rescuing Jack, Kate and Sawyer is a good move, Desmond quickly becomes one of the best characters on the series and the cat and mouse antics with Ben and Jack are actually quite compelling. The writers also manage to make Sawyer and Kate more sympathetic as characters when you take into account the treatment they have to endure. Their episodes “Every Man For Himself”, “I Do” and “Left Behind” are brilliant in giving more of both character’s inner working and I’m sure they were plenty of people happy to see Kate and Sawyer engage in some naughty cage sex.

Juliet is also another joy in the season. Elizabeth Mitchell is a great find as the character and it’s brilliant that throughout the season, you’re constantly guessing which side she’s genuinely on. When she’s not trying to emotionally engage with Jack, she makes an attempt to coerce him into killing Ben and it’s something that nearly costs her as well. In “Not In Portland” and “One Of Us”, we learned more about how and why Juliet was reeled into joining the Others and while Ben does seem to harbour feelings for her, it’s blatantly obvious that she’s repelled by him. We also learned that she’s quite the brilliant fertility doctor, what with her successful attempts of getting her sister pregnant but even Juliet’s skills can’t save the mothers on the island from dying and by the end of the season, it’s Juliet who has no problems in betraying Ben and giving Sun a warning about her pregnancy in “DOC”.

Ben is definitely the man of the hour throughout the third season. Like many classic foes, Ben doesn’t consider any of his actions to be immoral whatsoever. It doesn’t matter that he stole Danielle’s daughter Alex and raised her as his own. Nor does it matter that he tries to brainwave Alex’s boyfriend Karl or makes with psychological threats to Sawyer’s well being or during the final moments of “The Man Behind The Curtain” shoot Locke and dump him in the same pit as the corpses of the Dharma Initiative. In a lot of ways, Ben is dangerous, smart, scary but also kind of stupid given how easily in the finale that Jack and company were able to grab him in “Through The Looking Glass Parts 1 and 2”.

Getting to the most compelling character this season, it really is Desmond when all is said and done. His episodes “Flashes Before Your Eyes” and “Catch 22” might have succeeded in getting viewers to care about his relationship with Penny and the desperation he has to get back to her in the real world but his abilities to see into the future also strikes a note, particularly as the increasingly annoying Charlie is dragged into this plot.

With Nikki and Paolo making no impact and quickly dispatched in the so-so “Expose” (an episode which also attempted to give their character’s history during crucial events in the first two seasons), Charlie was the next marked character in the series. With him and Claire slowly getting back on track, it probably couldn’t have come at a worse time for Charlie but at least the writers thought his demise out. Bringing in Naomi in the last seven episodes with the hope that her people could get everyone else of the island led Charlie to making a sacrifice in the finale. As someone who grew increasingly bored of the character, I have to admit to finding his death sad. It also didn’t help that the episode before the finale, “Greatest Hits” did a far greater job in making me care for Charlie than any of his other flashbacks. In fact a lot of the characters that I care about got hit and miss flashbacks. Hurley had daddy issues in “Tricia Tanaka Is Dead”; Sayid had to deal with the wrath of a woman he tortured in “Enter 77” while Claire more or less confirmed that Jack was her half brother in “Par Avian”. Although Locke was quite detestable this season, his remaining episodes “The Man From Tallahassee” and “The Brig” were absolute stonkers, especially given that Anthony Cooper was responsible for crippling Locke and setting Sawyer on his con man path. Anthony’s death at the hands of Sawyer were traumatic but deserving. With 23 episodes in and confirmation around this point that the show was to end in 2010 after it’s sixth season, the sudden move to introduce flash forwards was inspired. In fact, the more I think about it, the more it occurs to me that this season was often too good at times. After all only two episodes out of twenty three were genuinely not worth watching. The rest were gems.

EXTRAS: Well every season the commentaries seem to lessen and here we only got commentaries on the episodes “A Tale Of Two Cities”, “Expose” and “The Man Behind The Curtain”. Thankfully while commentaries might not be this show’s strong point, the rest of the extras on offer are just superb. “The World Of The Others” gives a great look into the main villains of Season Three while “Lost Flashbacks” and “Lost On Location” are successful in filling in the blanks. “The Lost Book Club” gives us a look into the numerous literary references throughout the series and the “Crew Tribute With Evangeline Lilly” is rather cute. Elsewhere other good extras includes “Lost In A Day”, “The Next Level – Inside The Video Game” as well as the “Cast In Clay” and usual array of entertaining bloopers and slightly revealing deleted scenes. Overall an incredibly satisfying package here.

Dingdong Dantes' Strip-Act is the Highlight of Bench "Blackout"

There is no doubt about it! Dingdong Dantes is really the hottest guy in town right now. Proof is the earth-shaking response of the audience in the just concluded Blackout: The Bench Denim and Underwear Fashion Show in Araneta Coliseum last July 25.

See video below:

Hottest Kapamilya and Kapuso Stars Join Forces for Bench's "Blackout"

Some of the biggest names in Philippine show business gathered for the much-awaited denim and underwear fashion event of the year—Blackout: The Denim and Underwear Fashion Show—held last night, July 25, at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

Blackout became one of the few instances where talents from rival giant networks ABS-CBN and GMA-7 came together, although the Kapamilyas outnumbered the Kapusos. It also became a venue where the talents from each network were able size up their competition based on the response from the audience.

The biennial fashion event introduced the latest Bench denim and underwear collection. This year, Bench also featured the works of four Filipino artists: Abi Goy, illustrator/graphic designer; Jun de Leon, premier photographer; Raymond Red, filmmaker; and Lesley Lobo, fashion designer. Blackout, which ran for almost an hour, was directed by Ariel Lozada.

Understandably, the loudest cheers and applause were reserved for the male stars since most of the crowd who filled the Big Dome were women and gays. But the female stars also held their own at the ramp, along with over a hundred models clad in their skimpiest underwear.

During the earlier part of the show, a nude man behind the black silhouette was flashed on the giant screen. As the camera focused on his face, the crowd shrieked in delight when it was finally revealed that it was Kapamilya hunk Rafael Rosell with only his hands covering his private parts.

Four other hunks did the "full monty" later on the show. But the night truly belonged to some of hottest male and female stars who paraded their beauty and bodies in Bench denims and undies.

Two of GMA-7's prized leading men, Richard Gutierrez and Dingdong Dantes, proved their star power and great form when they got the night's loudest cheers from the audience. But based on what we heard and saw, Dingdong's appearance made a greater impact on the crowd; perhaps due to the fact that it was his first time to join the Bench fashion show and more so because he dropped his pants even for only a few seconds.

Not to be outdone were Kapamilya leading men Jake Cuenca, Sam Milby, and Diether Ocampo who also became instant crowd favorites. Jake and Diether gamely played to the crowd by showing a bit more of their behind.

The crowd also roared with delight upon seeing ABS-CBN stars Gerald Anderson, Kim Chiu, Enchong Dee, Zanjoe Marudo, Jon Avila, John Prats, Rayver Cruz, and PBB teen housemates Robi Domingo and Ejay Falcon.

Also getting loud applause and cheers were other ABS-CBN stars like Pinoy Big Brother ex-housemates Bruce Quebral, and Kian Kazemi; PBB teen ex-housemate Valerie Weignmann; Angelica Panganiban; Sarah Geronimo; Shaina Magdayao, Rica Peralejo; Iya Villania, Christian Bautista, Rachelle Ann Go; David Chua; and Ryan Eigenmann.

Aside from Richard and Dingdong, other Kapuso stars who joined this year's Bench's fashion show were Katrina Halili, Alessandra de Rossi, JC de Vera, sisters Ehra and Michelle Madrigal, Jay-R, Bubbles Paraiso, Margaret Wilson, Marco Alcaraz, and Francine Prieto.

The other stars who ramped on the catwalk were Carlene Aguilar, Precious Adona, Nancy Jane (formerly known as Nancy Castiglione), Jennifer Lee, and Jon Hall.

Bench favorites Jomari Yllana, Wendell Ramos, Antonio Aquitania, and John Estrada with girlfriend and former Miss Earth Priscilla Meirelles also added more glitter to the star-studded affair.

Also on the roster were some familiar faces in the world of fashion and showbiz: Brent Javier, Luke Jickain, Bench discoveries Carlo Guevara and John James Uy, Carlos Concepcion of Showboys, Janvier Daily (ex-flame of comedienne Ethel Booba), former teen actor Benj Besa, and StarStruck graduates Bugz Daigo and Chad Burden.

Bench royalty couple Richard Gomez and wife Lucy Torres-Gomez did not ramp on stage like the other celebrities. They just walked along with Bench big boss Ben Chan at the finale to join the other stars.

Conspicuously absent were Bench endorsers Piolo Pascual and John Lloyd Cruz.

As if there were not enough stars on stage, more stars were spotted in the audience.

Eddie Gutierrez and wife Annabelle Rama, who came for Richard and the other talents of Annabelle who are part of the show; Richard's ex-girlfriend Anne Curtis and Georgina Wilson came together with pals Isabelle Diaz Daza (daughter of former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz), and Liz Uy (girlfriend of John Lloyd Cruz). The four gorgeous ladies were seated just a row apart from Richard's parents. After the show, we saw Anne and Georgina greet Eddie and Annabelle. Richard's twin brother Raymond Gutierrez covered the event and interviewed some celebs, including Georgina, who is in town for a vacation from her studies in Australia.

Eddie and Annabelle, who were on the front row at the center of patron section, were seated beside Dr. Vicky Belo and boyfriend Dr. Hayden Kho, Mother Lily Monteverde and daughter Roselle, PEP and YES! editor-in-chief Jo-Ann Maglipon, Tessa Prieto-Valdes and her husband, and the lady executives of GMA-7.

Kris Aquino came with husband James Yap; Karylle was also there to support boyfriend Dingdong.

We also saw Bea Alonzo; Assunta de Rossi; Niña Jose; Wendy Valdez; John "Sweet" Lapus; directors Joel Lamangan, Manny Valera, Louie Ignacio, and Ruel Bayani; talent managers Douglas Quijano, Arnold Vegafria, and Manny Valera; columnist Dolly Anne Carvajal with son IC Mendoza; and ABS-CBN executives Cory Vidanes and Deo Endrinal.

Blackout is the fourth edition of Bench's biennial denim and underwear fashion event. The first three were One Night Only (2002), Understatement (2004), and Fever (2006).
