DENNIS TRILLO Not Yet Ready To Go Bold

Dennis Trillo's sexy dance sequence in one particular episode in the afternoon drama Magdusa Ka had caused quite a stir. Does this mean that he is now ready to shed his boyish image for a more daring role.

Dennis, who looked quite unsure, said "Siguro willing, pero hindi naman ganoon eksaktong eksena. Siguro puwede naman na i-showcase yung iba ko pang talent sa ibang paraan, di ba?"

Dennis also said that he has no plans in revealing more of himself and join the "daring bandwagon"—a move previously made by fellow Kapuso actor Dingdong Dantes, who recently showed skin in Bench's billboards. However, he hinted that it might be possible.

"Siguro in time," Dennis said. "Pero kasi nakita ko yung mga gawa ni ‘Dong, e. Medyo hindi ko pa kaya, na medyo ganoong ka-daring. Siguro ‘pag dumating yung trabaho na kailangan mong gawin yun, siguro kung wala na akong choice talaga, e, kaya. Pero ngayon, ayokong makipagsabayan sa kanya dahil siya na yun ,e."

ANGEL LOCSIN, the New Folded & Hung Endorser Replacing CLAUDINE BARRETTO?

Will there be an issue between Claudine Barretto and Angel Locsin over the Folded and Hung endorsement?

Minsan nang nagkrus ang landas ng Kapamilya actresses na sina Claudine at Angel over a supposedly snubbing incident. Kalilipat pa lang ni Angel sa ABS-CBN that time.

It was reported that when she was placed in a dressing room then already occupied by Claudine and other Star Magic female stars, lumabas daw si Claudine hanggang sa tuluyan nang nagpalipat ito sa ibang dressing room.

Both camps denied the incident. Wala raw ganitong nangyaring eksena and the issue died down immediately.

Now, it is a known fact that Claudine is the original female endorser of Folded and Hung. Kauna-unahan din siyang celebrity endorser ng said clothing line at sumunod na lang sa kanya si Polo Ravales when it decided to advertise the male line.

When Claudine got pregnant over her first child to husband Raymart Santiago, pinalitan muna siya ng isa pang Star Magic star na si Maja Salvador.

Nagbalik showbiz na si Claudine at natapos na ang contract ni Maja, so Claudine was reportedly asked back to the fold—no pun intended. From two separate sources, napag-alaman na nag-pictorial na nga raw si Claudine for the coming new campaign of Folded and Hung.

Tila walang alam ang ikalawa naming kinausap for confirmation about this na si Angel na nga ang ilu-launch ng Folded and Hung as its new endorser this June 21 in a very big way sa TriNoMa raw. Our second source said that they will go back on us dahil wala nga silang alam dito, although like our first source, na-confirm na natuloy nga raw ang pictorial ni Claudine. There was no more follow-up sa pagtatanong namin.

Ang inisip na lang namin, baka naman magiging parehong female endorsers sina Claudine and Angel ng Folded and Hung.

BAD RULES

Bad rules lead to bad results. The loyalty with which the DNC Rules Committee defended enforcing its terrible rules was very disheartening.

It may have seemed like a good idea at one point to try to prevent the nomination process from being too long by barring states from having early primaries (as if that worked...) But once it became apparent -- a long time ago -- that Florida and Michigan were going to become problems, the rules should have been changed -- a long time ago!

The rule as applied to Florida, for example, gave Florida Republicans, who controlled the state legislative process, another chance to dirty trick the Democrats by legislating the Florida primary date ahead of the deadline; thus, effectively creating a problem for the Democrats in the state.

Regardless of who was responsible for setting the Michigan date early, bringing more Democrats to the polls to support the primary process was much more important for winning the state in November than leaving the primary results unconvincing and just hanging there waiting to disenfranchise or de-enthusi-ize the Democratic voters.

Anyone who thinks it is more important to uphold a bad rule than to mobilize and motivate voters in a state to vote Democratic in November should not be on the DNC.

Since Obama would have been almost as surely the nominee if they had seated the two delegations according to the most pro-Clinton formula as he is with this "compromise," it would have been much wiser to acknowledge the failure in practice (however well intentioned they might once have seemed) of the "timing" rules and seat the delegates, than defend the "principle" of following a rule (however bad) and exacerbate intra-party conflicts, resentment, and general bad feeling in two crucial states for the Democrats.

The object and purpose, after all, of everything the DNC does is to elect Democrats. Why insist on rules that work against this goal? Rules don't exist for themselves. They exist for a purpose. So when the rules are working against the purpose, instead of for it, you change the rules.

Flashback Friday: Vivien Vee - Give Me A Break

"My body's not a toy"

My friend and I discovered the above video a few months ago and fell in love with every single, campy aspect of it. The spastic/hypnotic arm movements, the "countdown to ignition," the sorta-bored, sorta-into-it audience members, the handclaps, the outfit, the hair... everything. It's really very funny. And, the cool thing is, once you get past all of that this song itself is a fantastic example of Italo Disco in its prime. I love the way that it's basically two songs spliced together (keeps things from getting boring) and of course the beat is pretty irresistable. Unfortunately, Vee didn't release very much more, although it seems (from my research, at least) that she had a few other hits.

Natalie Portman's Shaved Head - Bedroom Costume

"I see you in your room"

I love getting emails and suggestions from readers... much more than from record companies/labels (most of which obviously don't read the blog or know what kind of music I post). Today's band, the horribly (HORRIBLY) named Natalie Portman's Shaved Head (yes, that's their name) were sent in from a reader and I fell in love with them straight away. Their album reminds me of the Scissor Sisters demo in its craziness (just check out the hilarious Beard Lust), but it's also got a much more polished electro rock edge reminiscent in ways of bands like Hellogoodbye. All their songs are pretty much equally as good. There aren't really any standouts or obvious singles, but everything's quite nice. So, pick of the draw, I'm posting the upbeat, duel vocal Bedroom Costume today, which just happens to be unbelievably catchy and summery. As a bonus, the band's from my neck of the woods (Seattle!).

Sparks - Lighten Up, Morrissey

"She won't have sex unless it's done with a pseudonym"

Sparks' new album Exotic Creatures Of The Deep is, unfortunately, the first release by them in a long time that I've felt pretty much ambivalent about. It's not that it's bad... it's just (for me at least) that after a few albums of the same kind of stuff, the shtick is getting a bit old. Of course, it is a Sparks album, and they are one of the best bands of all time, so there are bound to be some gems regardless. Lighten Up, Morrissey was one of the most speculated-about songs prior to its release because of the name-dropping title. I couldn't care less about the title. I like it because it's an amazing pop song with an instantly catchy melody. Furthermore, it has a (very very welcome) rockier sound that stands out from the rest of the more symphonic offerings. It's a welcome change for them, complete with their trademark (sometimes too much so) witty lyrics. I critique because I love them, and this is one example of why.

Music Go Music - Light Of Love

"Speak to me darling in hushed tones"

Many people have compared this track to vintage Abba and that was enough for me to give it a listen. Of course, I loved it... and now I'm sharing it with you today. Music Go Music is a Canadian group who's released only one EP so far but promises a full album later. This particular song (which is getting all the buzz) is offered for free on the band's myspace, and I'd recommend going there and listening to their other stuff as well, because it's all kinda different but very good (especially the space disco of I Walk Alone). As for the Abba comparisons... the vocals and 70's glam beat are definitely there. Of course, it's not as good as Abba's stuff but the comparison is still definitely justified.

May 26 TV Ratings: KIM CHIU's "My Girl" Leads Kapamilya's Primetime Programs; Placed 5th in the Ratings

The Pinoy version of the hit Koreanovela My Girl, starring Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, premiered last night, May 26. My Girl posted a rating of 28 percent to take the fifth position in the daytime race, and more importantly topping all ABS-CBN programs.

Although My Girl's debut performance in the ratings game is quite astonishing, GMA-7's formidable quartet—Dyesebel, Joaquin Bordado, Babangon Ako't Dudurgin Kita, and 24 Oras—remained strong in the Top 4 positions. The new Kimerald primetime series, which replaced Claudine Barretto's Maligno, went up against the latter part of Dyesebel (39.8 percent) and most part of Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita (31.3 percent).

ABS-CBN's reality program Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus also benefited from My Girl's strong showing as it posted a high 26.4 percent, which is good for sixth place. Former top Kapamilya show The Singing Bee dropped to seventh place with 25.8 percent.

Completing the Top 10 are TV Patrol World, Lobo, and The Legend.

In the daytime race, ABS-CBN's new afternoon soap Ligaw Na Bulaklak starring Roxanne Guinoo also had its debut Monday. The replacement show of Prinsesa ng Banyera got 15.6 percent to take the seventh place.

Kaputol ng Isang Awit posted the highest rating of the day with 20.5 percent; followed by Daisy Siete, Eat Bulaga, Magdusa Ka, and El Cuerpo Deseo.

Here are the comparative TV ratings of ABS-CBN and GMA-7 shows for May 26 based on the overnight ratings conducted by AGB Nielsen Philippines among Mega Manila households:

"YES Magazine" June 2008 Issue Features Ex-Couple GABBY CONCEPCION and SHARON CUNETA

For the month of June, YES! Magazine features separate interviews on ex-couple Gabby Concepcion and Sharon Cuneta.

In his 12-page feature, Gabby talks about his return to Philippine showbiz, his problem with his contracts (which his current manager Rose Flaminiano helps to explain), his anger and disappointments in the business, his life in the U.S., wife Ginbee Gonzales, his plans for the future, KC, and of course—hesitant at first and very cautious in discussing—Sharon Cuneta.

Gabby is careful in his words on revealing why their marriage did not work, but points to "outside influence" as one of the reasons.

He also says, "We did not live in a normal environment. Sharon is not a normal, ordinary person because, remember, she is a daughter of a mayor. She is rich... Not everybody is like that. And the same in my situation. I was barely 21, and I was in show business, and we were making one hit after another. Both of our lives were abnormal. We didn't see it that way back then, that's why we can't say who made a mistake or what went wrong. The whole thing was a disaster."

Sharon, on the other hand, for the first—and probably last—time, shares select stories about their break-up in her 10-page interview. To put a stop, as she says, to people talking "about things they really they don't know anything about."

Sharon did not reveal all there is to know about her separation with Gabby, but gave statements that would lead one to guess on what triggered Sharon to leave Gabby.

She says, "He's one of the most good-looking men in this business! In this country! So I could not have expected somebody that good-looking, that young and popular, to be very far away from temptations. Siguro, at that time, I just could not believe it because it was really the last thing I want. So, marami nang nangyayari, I don't want to get into details. Up to this day, I remind everyone nobody knows exactly why we separated. Truth be told, once we were married, he really was not the husband that I'd dreamt of."

More exclusives in the June issue of YES!—a 10-page photo gallery of the movie Caregiver, with 40 pictures provided by Sharon herself, with her own captions; a sentimental look-back at Sharon's pregnancy and birth to daughter KC, and the court documents declaring Gabby and Sharon's marriage null and void.

These and more in the June issue of YES! which is now available in all magazine outlets.

Star Cinema's CAREGIVER Graded "A" by Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB)

Members of the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) have decided to give a grade of "A" for Star Cinema's 15th anniversary offering, Caregiver. This government agency tasked to evaluate movies intended for commercial release recently announced that Sharon Cuneta's movie is eligible for a 100 percent amusement tax exemption.

Caregiver was shot mostly in London with cast members John Estrada, Rica Peralejo, Jhong Hilario, and Makisig Morales. The Megastar plays a grade school teacher who decides to give up her career in the Philippines to become a caregiver in a European country with her husband (played by John). Other stars of this movie include Boots Anson Roa, Mickey Ferriols, Lotlot de Leon, and John Manalo (who plays Sharon's son).

The last movie of Star Cinema to be given an "A" rating was the Metro Manila Film Fest entry Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo. ABS-CBN's production outfit will hold the premiere night of Caregiver later tonight, May 27, at SM Megamall.

How CHARICE Made It To "DAVID FOSTER and FRIENDS" Benefit Concert

The young singing sensation continues to count her blessings, among them making it to the elite list of people prolific songwriter, producer and musician David Foster call friends as they will perform at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Friday, May 23, alongside Foster’s other friends such as Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble, Brian McKnight, Babyface and Katharine McPhee, among others.

Charice met with the famous composer/producer in Los Angeles last year before she taped her Ellen guesting. They flew together to Las Vegas on a private jet to watch the farewell show of Celine Dion at the Caesar’s Palace Colosseum.

All these seem to be happening so fast for the diminutive diva, after her ground-breaking guestings on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Paul O’Grady Show in London, and just recently, Oprah.

Last Saturday, Charice shared the spotlight with Josh Groban, John Mayer and Alicia Keys in a show organized by Foster at the grand opening of the MGM Grand Casino-Hotel at Foxwoods in Connecticut.

Noted immigration lawyer Michael Gurfinkel and his wife Millie were with Charice and her mom Raquel in Connecticut and they shared their story with the Asian Journal. Atty. Gurfinkel helped expedite the issuance of US visas to Charice and her mom.

"David Foster put together and produced the very first show, featuring Alicia Keys, Josh Groban, John Mayer and, of course, the International Singing Sensation and pride of the Philippines, Charice. She appeared just before Josh and sang a medley of Whitney Houston hits (I Have Nothing and I Will Always Love You, from the movie The Bodyguard which starred Houston herself and Kevin Costner)," Millie shared.

Charice received a standing ovation, the only performer to receive one that night, and ovation, the only performer to receive one that night, and Foster asked the crowd after Charice finished her rousing rendition, "Would you like one more song?"

The audience cheered and shouted an enthusiastic "Yes!" The crowd’s request for an encore led David and Charice to do an unrehearsed performance of And I’m Telling You.

After they performed, the audience once again gave Charice yet another standing ovation.

Among those in the audience were Quincy Jones, and Michael Douglas with his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Backstage, David, Alicia and Josh congratulated Charice for her "phenomenal performance." For her part, the young diva was just so happy to be a representative of the Philippines on such an important world stage, with some of the biggest names in entertainment. "I hope I make my kababayans proud," Charice said.

BLUE STATE

Blue State
is a pleasant, amusing, romantic, road-trip comedy, set in a political diatribe. John Logue (Breckin Meyer, pleasant and extremely earnest) commits himself to moving to Canada after Bush wins re-election. Chloe Hamon (Anna Paquin) is the hot girl with blue hair who answers his ad for a travelling companion.

Anna Paquin (Oscar winner for The Piano) is really terrific in this small, independent, extremely low budget film. She delivers moods and feeling with the smallest movement of an eye or lip, and seems alert, present and deeply involved at every moment.

The film was produced by (many! people, including)
Andrew Paquin, Anna's brother, and was edited by Adam B. Stein, recently a finalist On The Lot.

The film is nicely shot, especially considering it was shot in twenty days at a rate of 5 pages a day. This is the first feature for writer/director
Marshall Lewy. Nice work.
Walter Meego - More Than I Can Say

"It makes me sad to feel so uninspired"

A really, really good American album (I know, what are the odds?) comes out tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited. Walter Meego's synth happy music is guaranteed to become a big part of my summer 2008 soundtrack. I loved the tracks I heard before the album's release, and I'm so happy to say that the album they come from is just as good. Think 70's era David Bowie vamping over 80's style synth-and-bass party pop. The songs define the meaning of cool. It's perfect beach music. My favorite track is probably the ultra-catchy single Wanna Be A Star, but instead I'm going to post a non-single that's almost as good. More Than I Can Say opens with a fantastic riff and continues through with an insanely catchy chorus. I love these guys!!

Digital Film "Paupahan" Premieres June 22

Award-winning actor and businessman Allen Dizon is now a film producer. The former bold star produced this full-length film under his own company called ATD Entertainment Productions. Allen was named Best Supporting Actor during the 2007 Star Awards and the FAMAS Awards for his role as an aging macho dancer in Twilight Dancers.

Paupahan (international title: Crossroads)—directed by Joven Tan, with cinematography by top lensman Romy Vitug—is scheduled to have its theatrical run starting July 2. This movie features a powerhouse cast composed of Ms. Gloria Romero, Jay Manalo, Snooky Serna, Angelu de Leon, German Moreno, Krista Ranillo, Joseph Bitangcol, Kirby de Jesus and Allen himself.

Paupahan is graded "B" by the Cinema Evaluation Board. The film received R-13 classification from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) without cuts.

Premiere nights are scheduled at SM Megamall on June 22 (Sunday) and SM Pampanga on June 30 (Monday).

Written by Dennis Evangelista, Paupahan is set in a slum area located next to a cemetery. Three seemingly unrelated but intertwining stories about the "living dead," marginal characters whose lives have hit a dead end, unravel the film's message.

According to producer Allen Dizon, "When it comes to logistics, production value and cast, our movie is close to mainstream independent films. Pinaghirapan talaga namin siya. As in best effort to come up with a quality film. We are eyeing international markets and festivals abroad for this film."

"I Will No Longer Return to Wowowee Even if They Asked Me To." - LARA QUIGAMAN

2005 Miss International Precious Lara Quigaman broke her silence regarding the issue on why she was axed on the ABS-CBN noontime show “Wowowee”.

In an interview with Boy Abunda on the Buzz Sunday afternoon, Precious admitted that she indeed brought her boyfriend in Hawaii last week when the noontime program held a special show in the island. But it’s not only her boyfriend that she brought with her but also her mom.

She said, “I was pulled out…siguro axed talaga is the term. I’ll tell you the story talaga… Nagalit si Kuya, Kuya Willie [Revillame]. There was a rule daw that I was not allowed to bring a boyfriend, which is very unclear to me. I did not know. I wasn’t told very clearly. The only time I was told was parang it was like a joke and I even… I’m not gonna even say that anymore. “Pero there was no rule to me. I didn’t understand that. And I knew naman talaga that if I was going to bring my boyfriend and my mom, dapat hindi maapektuhan ang work, which is what happened.

I’m sure that the people from Wowowe who came with us, they can attest to it na hindi ko naman napabayaan ang work ko. I was never late. I was never absent for any rehearsal, for any TV guesting, for the show itself. I did my best. I gave my best. So, surprise lang talaga ako doon sa reason nila sa pagtanggal sa akin because I brought my boyfriend and my mom along,” Lara added.

Boy Abunda clarified with Lara that the rule forbidding any of its stars to bring their girlfriend or boyfriend to work is not a company rule of ABS-CBN. But each program of the kapamilya network has its own “house rules” and unfortunately in Wowowee, this is one of them.

Lara further explains, “The only time they saw my mom and my boyfriend was at the last day ng stay namin sa Hawaii. Only in the airport na nga lang, tapos nung nasa airport. My mom didn’t even watch the show para lang wala silang masabi. Kasi I was told, okay if they are coming, kung sasama sila, huwag na lang silang magpakita. Don’t let them come with you in the rehearsal or anything like that. And that was they did.

Lara firmly declared that she will no longer return in Wowowee even if Willie Revillame and the rest of the staff will ask her back. She added that despite of the matter, she will still be a kapamilya and her fans can still watch her in “That’s My Doc.”

LUCIDA DS Glutathione Owners to Sue Newscaster KORINA SANCHEZ for Libel

PHOENIX HAS LANDED!

A raw, unprocessed image of Mars
taken by Phoenix shortly after arrival on Mars
...From NASA

Phoenix has landed on Mars. Launched in August, Phoenix used parachutes and reverse rockets to slow its decent to a solid landing on the North Polar, Arctic region of Mars.

Previous studies have shown the strong likelihood of a layer of H20-ice possibly as close as an inch below the surface. Phoenix is designed to dig into the surface and study the frozen water that it hopes to find there (including the possibility of organic material in the ice). Other experiments on Phoenix will measure moisture, dust and other meteorological properties of the atmosphere.

Yam Laranas' THE ECHO Teaser Poster, Movie Clips and Reviews

…the mood and tone were really good, there were a few really shocking moments, and making Jesse (Bradford) an ex-con really added a new layer to it…” - Todd Brown, Twitchfilm

Here’s the very first review on Yam Laranas' first international movie The Echo written by Todd Brown of Twicthfilm.net:

Long time Twitch readers may well remember us talking about Filipino horror film Sigaw a couple years back. Written and directed by Yam Laranas it came late enough in the run of Asian horror films – and in some ways played to the standard conventions of the genre enough - that many overlooked it but Sigaw was such a well crafted little gem of a film that introduced some subtle changes to the genre that I truly believe it is one of the last truly important films to come out of that initial Asian horror boom.

And so I have been tracking with great interest the development of the English language version of the film. Titled The Echo it again puts Laranas at the controls shooting a script adapted from his own by the writing duo of Eric Bernt and Shintaro Shimosawa. The result feels more like a riff on the themes that drove the original film than a straight up remake and it is arguably the most art house oriented picture to come out of Roy Lee’s very commercially minded – in a good way – Vertigo Entertainment.

Jesse Bradford (Flags Of Our Fathers) stars as Bobby, a young man freshly released from prison after serving several years for killing a man who was trying to rape Bobby’s girlfriend (Amelia Warner). Bobby is looking to build a fresh life but where to begin? His old friends have either moved away or won’t return his calls, his girl has moved along with her life without him, he has no job, the only home available to him the shabby apartment left vacant when Bobby’s mother died alone and terrified of unseen voices while Bobby was in prison. Despite being constantly surrounded by the noise and bustle of New York City Bobby is isolated and alone.

But Bobby perseveres. His parole officer finds an employer will to take a risk on him, he slowly begins to reconnect with his girl, and he slowly begins to clear the signs of his mother’s descent into madness from the apartment. What could have happened to her? Why didn’t anyone help? And did the blame lie partially on Bobby himself for leaving her unsupported while in prison?

As the signs of his mother’s paranoia become more clear – a closet with interior deadbolts stocked with tin cans and an accumulation of garbage that makes it clear she locked herself into the confined space for days at a time – Bobby’s guilt begins to grow and become more forceful until his memories and shame begin to take physical shape. He sees her in the mess left behind and begins to be plagued by strange noises coming from the walls and floor of his apartment. But those noises are nothing compared to the sounds of violence coming regularly from the apartment next door, sounds of a young wife and her little girl being beaten by the husband. It’s a horrific situation but one that Bobby feels powerless to do anything about: after all, he’s a freshly paroled convict and the man is a cop.

For fans of the original the point of similarity is obvious: young man in new apartment has to cope with domestic violence next door. And anyone who has ever been in this situation – which I have – can tell you how truly debilitating and horrifying it is before you add the additional supernatural layer that the film(s) bring in. The changes are also quite obvious. In the original film the young man was simply striking out on his own, moving into his first apartment in a bid for independence. Bobby’s criminal history, the death of his mother, and the collapse of his relationship with his girlfriend are all new devices for this version and all add layers of depth that make Bobby a more difficult and rewarding character. That strength does come with a cost in the early going as Bobby is so isolated that a healthy percentage of the film is Bobby on his own with minimal dialogue but Bradford is up to the challenge. Some of the other characters could have used a little bit more work but this is Bobby’s film all the way through and Bradford delivers.

On the technical end both films are far more about building mood and tone than piling on shock after shock and again, Laranas applies his considerable technical skills to that end. The man is a hugely accomplished cinematographer, reluctant to use digital tricks of any sort, and while he has an outside director of photography on The Echo - as opposed to Sigaw, which he shot himself – his fingerprints are all over the visuals and shooting style. Helping greatly in building the tone of the piece is the stellar sound design work that makes it clear throughout that while Bobby may be isolated he can never, ever be truly alone when living in the big city.

The Echo is a moody piece of work, a slow burner rather than a big shocker, and one that will likely prove a little bit difficult to market as a result. Just like its predecessor was not one of the big dogs in the original Asian horror boom this one arrives late enough in the remake game that some of the images have become a little overly familiar but also just like the original it shows that there is still some life in these bones and still stories worth telling.

My Review of Angel's 6x07: "After The Fall Part 7"

Connor: “Surprised you haven’t encountered one of my fathers.”
Kate: “‘One off …? Heh, LA.”

Things keep building up and getting rather juicy as this comic season continues to show vital signs of actual improvement. Last issue tackled four different characters so this issue continues with one Betta George and also starts unravelling the fates of both Wesley and Kate.

Betta’s story both begins and end this comic yet again. The fish has managed to break free of the reigns of his prison and is making a decent attempt to escape. Sadly for him, the vampire we all assumed was thicker than two short planks has other ideas.

While Betta George might be keen to catch up with Spike, the vampire minion stops him from actually leaving. Worse still for Betta is that he’s furious about the fish trying to underestimate him at every turn.

Much as I like the Betta George plot I kind of wish that we got the full story in the first few pages. I’m looking forward to really finding out why he’s so significant in the grand scheme of things. What the hell does Gunn want with him and it Betta is so important, then why aren’t Angel and Wesley looking for him also?

To kick off the new stories first there’s Wesley sitting in a chair looking content. From the get go, it’s clear that he’s supposed to be in some form of a happy setting and given the amount of misery he’s had to endure, a part of me was hoping that this happiness was real for him.

After all you’ve got Wesley with a big goofy grin on his face and there’s Fred telling him that they’ve done it. Wesley’s reaction is to wonder aloud if a small of her was still inside Illyria to which she reacts that she was. Given that Illyria lied to him as he began to die, I could see where this one was going.

It’s great to see to a romanticised Wesley and Fred. Both of them want to be together and there’s a few romantic images as well as the odd monster to slay that highlights what their future might be. All Wesley wants to do is curl up in bed with the woman he loves more than anything.

Sadly Wesley is also a realist and immediately that the Fred who is offering him such joys is a fake. It’s not specified who is actually posing as Fred, though a part of me suspects that it could be Eve. Well she always did have a penchant for being annoying when she wasn’t scheming against Wolfram And Hart herself.

Wolfram And Hart clearly believe that Wesley could do with being a bit more miserable. After all they want to reveal the Fred as a fake as soon as Wesley slept with her but they didn’t bank on Wesley figuring out so quickly. I’m hoping future underestimations on Wolfram And Hart’s part will play to Wesley’s advantage.

Wesley’s first reaction to the fake Fred is to strangle her but he manages to keep his anger under control. Not that it matters seeing as the fake is every bit as dead as he is. Still the woman is a right bitch in her happiness to goad Wesley and she doesn’t waste much time either in reminding him that he is still under contract.

As we’ve seen from the start of “After The Fall Part 1”, Wesley is literally being forced by Wolfram And Hart to spy on Angel and report to them everything he gets up to. Wesley doesn’t want to do this and uses both the fact he’s dead and idle threats to try and get out of the deal.

Unfortunately the threat of being separated from Fred even more and the fact he’s bound by contract means that he doesn’t get a say in the matter. Soon enough he’s kitted out for work and is told to get on with things.

Wesley’s reaction to the hell on earth outside is a nice touch. He’s actually surprised by the amount of carnage that has managed to happen in such a short time and while he’s still determined to best Wolfram And Hart, he is for the time being their unwilling little spy.

As for the woman posing as Fred (then again maybe it is Fred), she also questions Wesley’s motives. She knows that he’ll try to break free but she’s also aware that Wesley’s loyalty to Angel could be an advantage for her as well.

The most interesting however is that she mentions Wesley being the key to Wolfram And Hart being victorious in this battle. Needless to say, I really want to find out how exactly that one will come about. How can Wesley help this firm win and more importantly, aside from Angel, is there any other way they can lose?

Connor meanwhile also has the fear of losing his own battles. Being caught by a demon gang in the last issue wasn’t exactly the best of things that could’ve happened to him and given that his mind is less focused on escaping, it’s a good job that he doesn’t have to be the one who kills the demons ready to slaughter him.

Nope, instead that honour goes to Kate who since the last time we’ve seen her has clearly went on a Supernatural marathon and decided to become a demon hunter in her own right. All she says is two words before the demon holding Connor is shot to pieces.

As reintroductions go that is pretty damn cool. Kate’s never been one of my favourite characters but I’ve never hated and while I was expecting the mystery character for this issue to be someone like Cordelia, I have to admit that her story is riveting enough to keep me amused.

As soon as she shoots the demon both she and Connor have to leg it as the remaining demons are ready to tear them both to pieces. One of the amusing things with the running is that Connor goes into overload trying to prove his toughness as Kate gently dismisses him.

Still at least there is Kate’s car so they don’t have to do that much running and the driving allows for some more sparkling dialogue. Kate wants to get Connor away from danger and all Connor wants to do is explain that he can handle himself in a fight.

He’s also quick to mention that he has multiple fathers as Kate gives a brief description of her own antics. Basically she’s helping people fall through the cracks caused by this hellish setting and when she’s not doing that she’s also blowing up as many demons as she can possibly muster.

In fact before we get to see her base she also shoots at a grisly looking spider creature which looked like it could’ve came out Doctor Who. It also enough to get Kate suspicious while in a funny scene Connor thinks she’s flirting with him. I guess in every dimension Connor is going to have a thing for older women.

As Kate’s base of operations, it’s a slayer’s wet dream. Tonnes of weapons and books but Kate’s too busy telling Connor to relax to give him a guided tour. Also when she finishes working on a nifty little weapon of her, she leaves Connor there to ponder all by himself.

Well Connor does that for a few seconds and then he arms himself. More interestingly is that it’s perhaps Kate and not his father that influenced him to fight monsters in this environment. After all when he wasn’t thinking about her sexually, he seemed to be taking in a lot of what she said.

However seeing as the comic started with Betta George, it also finishes with him and the fish is back to being a prisoner. Even more interesting is that the vampire holding him hostage explains that Gunn has being using slayers to help with his training.

This might be the first element of Buffy that has slipped into Angel’s comic season. It’s a nice, sinister twist that will hopefully pay off in later issues and it also manages to both confuse and freak out Betta George so there’s double points in that too. However something like that has got to draw attention and obviously I don’t mean from Buffy’s neck of the woods.

Also in “First Night Part 2”

The cover I got was with Spike in pure vampire mode on top of a building, looking all gothic and creepy to boot.

Betta George (to the vampire): “Wow, you really wanna bite me but you can’t, huh? There’s a reason I’m Hell’s most sought after fish. I’m a powerful telepath, little man. I mean, look at us, you’re a vamp and I can still make you think this is going on. Virtually impossible, yet here we are.”

The only appearance from Spike this issue is the image that Betta George produces to the vampire holding him hostage.

Betta George (to the vampire): “When your boss gets back, tell him I’m sorry I couldn’t stick around but I had to go see a British guy about kicking his ulp.”

Fred: “Sweetie … we did it.”
Wesley: “You were in there.”
Fred: “Maybe a smidge. You always knew.”

I have to give big praise to Nick Runge who really made both Wesley and Fred in this comic actually look like Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker.

Wesley: “What now?”
Fred: “What now …is us. Is this. Forever. We’ve earned it. We’ve earned whatever we want and for old time’s sake we can do this sometimes. But each and every time … we’ll be just fine. And we’ll always come back here.”

Wesley: “It sounds wonderful.”
Fred: “It’s getting there.”
Wesley: “If only … this wasn’t a lie.”

Visions we saw with Wesley and Fred included them by a field and a mountain, a horse drawn carriage and slaying a devil like demon.

Wesley: “Do yourself a favour. Stop pretending you’re her. It won’t get you anywhere except dead.”
Fred: “Well then we’d have something in common. See I knew you’d be smarter than this. They thought you’d be so desperate to believe that we’d have to drop the curtain and tell you when it would hurt the most.”

Fred: “I can’t believe you didn’t want to live in the lie for a while. I would’ve done whatever you wa-”
Wesley: “Shut up. You think I’ll be a company man? Really?”

Wesley had a snake on his back before forced into his suited attire. That has to mean something else, right?

Wesley: “What’s his fau- oh.”
Fred: “Yeah heaven isn’t this clichéd but hell … stereotype is pretty dead on.”

Connor: “It’s cool, I’ve done this kind of thing before.”
Kate: “I can tell.”
Connor: “Hey I grew up in a hell dimension.”
Kate: “Well then this oughta be like old home week.”

The cover issue I got here was also a poster in the middle of the comic book as well. Works better as a poster too.

Kate (to Connor): “A man wiser than both of us helped me through a crisis of conscience once. He said to me and I’m paraphrasing here …‘in the greater scheme. Or the bigger picture, nothing we do matters. There is no grand plan. No big win. If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do because that’s all there is’.”

There’s a double issue frenzy in June. Issue 8 is out on June 11 and Issue 9 is out on June 25th.

Betta George (to the vampire): “And what is with that one word in your head over and over. Seriously what the hell is a slayer?”

Chronology: Seconds after “After The Fall Part 7” and “Not Fade Away”.

I liked this one. “After The Fall Part 7” is upping the intrigue on the hell on earth situation but I can’t help but think that Season Six should’ve started with this story rather than the format it’s placed in.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
