My Review of Dexter's 4x10: "Lost Boys"

Harry: “You always did have a soft spot for kids. They reminded you of what you lost that day in the shipping container.”
Dexter: “Innocence.”

Rarely to never do I have a genuinely hard time watching this show – I’m pretty unflappable but if I never see this episode again, it won’t be a moment too soon. It’s not an awful episode but it is without doubt the most difficult episode I’ve ever had to watch when it comes to this very show.

I should’ve known that killing in threes would turn out not to be entirely true for Arthur Mitchell but even I was shocked to find out that his cycle of violence actually started with a young boy whom was associated as Arthur himself and that the child’s death was some scary means of preserving their innocence.

It makes sense given that the other victims always represent his sister, mother and father but it certainly made for serious uncomfortable television as Trinity stalked the arcades and kidnapped a young lad named Scott in order to act out the cycle all over again. Even with Dexter on the trail, I actually thought that Arthur would get away with murdering another child.

The scenes with Trinity and Scott were certainly some of the most uncomfortable ones that the series produced and Dexter himself definitely was leaving it to the last minute to rescue the child. It’s not that he wasn’t trying to help; it’s just that Trinity seemed to be one step ahead of him until the very end.

Trying to bury Scott alive in cement was certainly a demented way of keeping the kid innocent but during the scuffle with Trinity and Dexter, I’m surprised that Trinity didn’t try to kill two birds with one stone and also bury Dexter. Similarly it can be argued that Dexter should’ve given Arthur a far deadlier whack over the head with the shovel before he rescued Scott too.

Trinity’s been a fascinating villain all season long and the last few episodes have definitely increased that fascination. His actions have always been incredibly monstrous and the tyrannical hold he wields over his own family didn’t make for great viewing last week but his murdering of kids really escalated him into sheer levels of scariness. Forget learning, Dexter, this guy needs putting down and fast.

As for Trinity’s relationship with Christine, therein lie some more complications. Unlike Jonah who seems to know that his father has a deadly side (but might not know the extent), Christine is all too aware of her father’s murdering ways and desperately tried to get his attention. Had she not mentioned that Deb was on her case, I can safely assume that Trinity would’ve adhered to his original arrangement with his daughter this week.

If Sally and Rebecca fear Trinity and Jonah despises him, then Christine falls into the scarier category of wanting to impress her father. She willingly shot both Lundy and Deb in order to protect him and openly admitted that she knew about his killing sprees, despite his staunch denials to her during their scene in the parking lot.

I did actually think that she admitted to killing Lundy that Trinity was going to react by killing his own daughter. His foul mouthed about her after she left confirmed his disapproval and if Deb doesn’t get Christine put behind bars by next week, then Christine might have the misfortune of becoming her father’s latest victim.

I wasn’t all that interested in Christine at the start of the season, so now having her firmly connected to Trinity and responsible for Lundy’s death has made her a better character. I also like the fact that she was seemingly aware of Deb trying to trap her, even if Christine herself wasted too much time trying to contact her father instead of legging out of Miami. Judging by the trailer for the next episode, she might not be in custody for long either but points to Deb for the effort, eh?

Deb, unlike her brother this week was far more on fire. She went about confirming her suspicious about Christine in a sneaky way and even though Quinn was pissed with her, even he managed to help Deb out in the end. I got the impression that Quinn was devastated that Christine was the shooter but I felt worse for her than I did for him for some reason.

Speaking of bad, I also felt for Dexter in this episode as well. I think the whole experience with Trinity is teaching him a harsh lesson about his family and the fact that his secret life can have consequences for them, such as Cody’s fight this week but overall, the domestic scenes with him and Rita have actually been some of the best on the series in a long while.

Also in “Lost Boys”

Dexter’s now keeping all his equipment in a shipping container, following Cody’s accident from last week.

Rita (re Harrison’s booster shots): “I don’t know how you’re not a complete wreck.”
Dexter (to himself): “Serial killer, remember?”

I really hope the writers aren’t going to drag out Masuka’s anxiety of wanting to tell Dexter about Rita and Elliot.

Dexter: “I’m calling the police.”
Trinity: “I so much as see a police car, the boy pays the price. You like protecting children, don’t you, like my son?”

Masuka: “I’m still figuring out how to phrase it.”
Deb: “How gay are you?”

Quinn let slip to Deb that he had issues with Dexter. Also that CI Valerie returned as well, even though Deb ignored her.

Harry: “How does a guy like this make a body disappear?”
Dexter: “The gulf stream does it for me.”

Dexter: “I don’t have email.”
Jonah: “Who doesn’t have email, Kyle?”
Dexter: “On the top of my head, people who don’t exist.”

Christine exhibited a lot of resentment for Jonah, Sally and Rebecca, which seems to confirm that she’s a child from a previous relationship/marriage.

Christine: “I’m your family too. I need you more than they do.”
Trinity: “Sorry, sweetie, it’ll have to wait. Love you.”

Dexter (to Trinity): “Burying a child in cement? That’s not very Christian of you.”

Chronology: Set with December 2009, give or take.

As I said at the start of the review, “Lost Boys” was a pretty uncomfortable episode to watch. It’s fantastically written, well acted, advanced plot lines, gave genuine thrills and surprises and had plenty of satisfying moments but again, it was an uncomfortable episode to watch.

Rating: 9 out of 10.

Trenta lettori e cinque critici: questa la giuria, che oggi alle 17 all’Hotel Regina Palace, nel corso di una cerimonia aperta al pubblico, proclamerà il vincitore dell’edizione 2010 del Premio Stresa di Narrativa. In corsa cinque opere: «L’anno dei dodici inverni» di Tullio Avoledo, «Ritorno nella valle degli angeli» di Francesco Carofiglio, «Le rondini di Montecassino» di Helena Janeczek, «La nota segreta» di Marta Morazzoni e «Hanno tutti ragione» di Paolo Sorrentino. La cerimonia conclusiva del Premio Stresa, tradizionalmente ospitato dai
saloni Liberty dell’Hotel Regina Palace, è un appuntamento tra il letterario e il mondano carico di attesa: nessuna anticipazione trapela sul vincitore, che viene scelto direttamente in sala, di fronte al pubblico. «Abbiamo un’altra regola ferrea – spiega Gianfranco Lazzaro, tra i fondatori della competizione letteraria nel 1976 e ora presidente della giuria – per vincere bisogna essere esserci e rispediamo sempre al mittente le richieste del tipo “partecipo se so di essere il vincitore”». Un pomeriggio senza rete, quindi, per gli autori, per i quali il “timore” della giuria è peraltro più che giustificato. Forse a causa della composizione a maggioranza popolare della giuria il nome di grido non basta e non mancano le vittime illustri.

Stresa: Giandrini inaugura il XXIV Ciclo di Incontri del centro culturale Charles Péguy

Prende il via oggi domenica 31 con uno spettacolo teatrale per tutta la famiglia il XXIV Ciclo di Incontri del centro culturale Charles Péguy di Stresa. Il Grand Hotel des Iles Borromeés ospiterà oggi il primo appuntamento dal titolo “Più in alto dell’aquila”, racconto di un’arrampicata scritto e interpretato da Davide Giandrini, attore e autore teatrale, tra i più conosciuti interpreti di teatro-canzone. Lo spettacolo avrà inizio alle 15.15. L’ingresso è libero.

“È… se Opera” è il titolo di quest’anno, titolo che vuole sottolineare come l’uomo proprio perché “opera” si sente vivo. Attraverso le diverse testimonianze che si susseguiranno fino ad aprile, il ciclo proporrà incontri con uomini e donne resi felici dalle loro opere: pensatori e volontari, poeti e martiri, insegnanti e uomini di spettacolo.

Stresa: 200 persone al casting per il film con Meyers. Difficili da trovare gli uomini tra i 40 e i 50 anni

Circa 200 aspiranti comparse si sono presentate oggi all'hotel La Palma di Stresa per i casting del film "Belle du Seigneur", produzione internazionale dall'adattamento del romanzo del 1968 di Albert Cohen. Le riprese si terranno il 3, il 5 e il 6 novembre sul Lago Maggiore. Location ancora in via di definizione. Nel cast Jonathan Rhys Meyers che interpreterà Solal, mentre il ruolo di Ariane Aublé è stato affidato alla modella Natalia Vodianova. Spiega Riccardo
Rogazione, della società incaricata del casting: "Oggi abbiamo visionato circa 200 persone. In prevalenza giovani e anche qualche pensionato, i più difficili da trovare sono gli uomini di 40-50 anni"

One Voice- a schlager Jedward: heading for Melodifestivalen as a Webjoker

The identical twin Music Factor is not a new image. You may recall The Twins UK group were up against Jade in 'Your Country Needs You' in 2009. Then Jedward ( pop boy twin Irish duo ) sent us all crazy in UK X-Factor. The new twins sisters from Sweden are nothing like these Twins before them. They are Schlager Twins with a hint of country, The girls have a rather great song called 'Varje steg' (each step) in the run up to the final Webjoker Selection on Stv site. They are down to the final 15 entries. Another couple to watch is Engla "Don't Stop" - who looks like she will qualify & Billy -who started out as a Gyllene Tider tribute band and have a great song in the GT style called 'Tusen natter' in my option both these should do well.

Back in 2009 One Voice twins won the 'OGAE Home Composed Song Contest with 'Har kommer solen' showing the girls are no One Song Glory- In fact we like this tune even more than the new one (click on the title to hear the track)

Video to Watch: Kapuso Christmas Station ID 2010 - "Isang Pagkilala sa Puso ng Pilipino Ngayong Pasko"

GMA-7 launches its Christmas Station ID for 2010 titled, "Isang Pagkilala sa Puso ng Pilipino Ngayong Pasko," a series of true-to-life inspiring stories. Meaning, there are three different GMA-7 Christmas Station IDs.

GMA-7's Christmas Station ID 2010 tell the real-life tales of Filipinos who, by sharing what they can, have made a difference in the lives of many. Starring in the vignettes are three of GMA-7's biggest Kapuso stars: Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera and Richard Gutierrez.

Richard Gutierrez plays Ed, a US immigrant based in Las Vegas, Nevada, whose heart remains very Filipino. With his wife, he personally packs balikbayan boxes with toys and school supplies and ships these at Christmas time to children in different provinces.

Marian Rivera portrays Mila, a woman who literally opens her home to the less fortunate. Mila welcomes the Season of Advent by selling Christmas decors in her garage. She uses the money she earns to prepare food and feed more than 200 families on New Year’s Eve.

Dingdong Dantes is cast as Jose, a modern day Christmas angel. Jose spends Christmas Eve going to different hospitals in Metro Manila, paying the bills of indigent patients unable to afford treatment. When the surprised families of these patients ask to thank him in person, they are told by hospital staffers that Jose has already left.

Shot in high-definition (HD) digital video technology, "Isang Pagkilala sa Puso ng Pilipino Ngayong Pasko," the 2010 GMA-7 Christmas ID is also slated to be shown in SM Cinemas.

TV Patrol World Update: Julius Babao and Karen Davila Out. Noli de Castro and Korina Sanchez In!

There will be some major major changes in the news department of ABS-CBN after the exit of Maria Ressa. The first casualty? TV Patrol World.

The news and current affairs bosses have talked to Julius Babao and Karen Davila that certain reformats will be made in TV Patrol and that certain personalities will be put in their place. Although they haven’t been directly assured, the evening slots of Bandila have been reserved for them.

So who are likely to go back to primetime news?

Since the old guards are back, it won’t be hard to understand the return of broadcasters-on-extended leaves Noli de Castro and Korina Sanchez to be back to work along with fellow old guard Ted Failon.

Although Kapamilyas may deny this but the move may be the network’s reaction to Willie Revillame’s show—which is fast closing in on TV Patrol’s ratings.

How will this impact on Julius’ and Karen’s careers? Oh well, they must have felt earlier on that they will be the sacrificial lambs in this whole circus. After all, ratings result is god in the television industry. But don’t you think they deserve better?

It's Just A Jump To The Left

If you haven't seen certain shows, then spoilers people.

Glee - Well, the much hyped episode of The Rocky Horror Picture Show finally took place and it was definitely an entertaining episode for Halloween. Not the best of the five we've had so far but in terms of the actual songs, I don't think anyone put a foot wrong to be honest. Personally, There's A Light and Time Warp were my favourites (but no Planet Schmanet Janet - boo!) and the more cleaner Touch-A, Touch-A also worked pretty but the story wasn't the best from a plot point. Finn and Sam's body issues almost seemed to have come out of nowhere and Will's little scheming against Emma and Carl was uncalled for. Even Sue's attempts of bagging a local Emmy managed to blow up in her face - for now. Still, even this episode continues to show that the series isn't a one season wonder and Becky's line about threatening to cut Will if he didn't give her chocolate was the highlight of the episode.

The Vampire Diaries - I will catch up with the second season at some point but right now, the first one is getting better and better. I liked the flashbacks to the great vampire massacre but at the same time, I already know that Katherine didn't perish (or isn't entombed) and I certainly thought Stefan was a dolt for trying to get his vampire hating father on side as well. Stefan and Elena trying to hide things from Damon though wasn't a smart move on their part and I kind of wished that Jeremy would get the hint about Anna being more than a stalker. That being said, it'a actually a relief that Stefan is aware of Alaric being more than a historian though.

Desperate Housewives - Erm, not really all that fussed about the last two episodes I've seen. I mean, I like the dramatic implications of Gabby/Carlos's baby swap and Bree's pursuit of Keith is amusing enough but I still think Susan's main plot is dumb (even if we've seen some consequences from a rival girl) and her financial problems aren't being written realistically but both Lynette and Paul's plots are boring the shit out of me. And three episodes in and I still think that Renee isn't working out for the series, though she's marginally better than Paul's wife (who seems like a spy or something).

Smallville - Interesting finale. We've had better ones but I did like the fact that Tess has been seemingly rescued/revived by Granny Goodness, that Lois finally realised who exactly the Blur really is and that we got some lovely moments between Chloe and Oliver and the Justice team. I also liked the final scenes between Clark and Zod, which are more than enough incentive for me to watch the tenth season all the more.

The Event - I tried to watch both episodes of this last week on Channel 4, I really did but I couldn't stick it. I resisted Flashforward last year because I thought it was little more than a Lost rip-off and I wished that I hadn't bothered with this show either. It's dull, predictable, the overuse of flashbacks annoyed the heck out of me and none of the characters really stood out at all. Plus aliens - it's been done better on about seven different shows. I definitely won't be watching anymore of this one.

- Balthazar Getty will be returning to Brothers And Sisters for the show's 100th episode, due to air in 2011.

- Caprica has been cancelled by SyFy but another Battlestar Galactica spin-off is on the way.

- Sara Ramirez has teased that there's a "rough road ahead" for Callie and Arizona in Grey's Anatomy.

- Misfits second season begins on E4 from November 11th at 10pm.

- Merlin has been renewed for a fourth season but will only have 10 episodes, which are due to be filmed in March 2011.

- Zach Braff will appear in an upcoming episode of Cougar Town in animated form.

- ABC are developing a fairytale themed series, called Once Upon A Time which will modernise many popular fairytales and has a female protagonist with a unique background.

- Glee will release it's Christmas album on November 16th, three weeks prior to it's own Christmas themed episode. The album will have Kurt and Blaine doing a cover of Baby, It's Cold Outside.

Stresa: "Le Rive del Gusto" sbarca all'isola. Il Gardon è servito!

Appuntamento "isolano" per le “Le Rive del Gusto” (sito web ufficiale). La manifestazione, che nasce dalla volontà di promuovere la cucina del territorio in maniera alternativa rispetto ai classici percorsi enogastronomici,  sarà ospitata domani sabato 30 ottobre dal Ristorante Belvedere all'Isola Pescatori (info e Menù) e servirà a dar vita, nel corso delle edizioni, al “Menù tipico del Lago Maggiore”. A tale scopo i Ristoratori concorrono con un Menù specifico a prezzo fisso all’interno del quale un
piatto in “gara”, di volta in volta prestabilito, viene votato da una giuria composta da esperti del settore, rappresentanti istituzionali del relativo comune di appartenenza e dai commensali stessi. A fine manifestazione il piatto vincente riceverà un riconoscimento ufficiale ed entrerà a far parte del “Menù tipico del Lago Maggiore”.

L’evento è articolato su un calendario di sette serate comprese tra Ottobre e Novembre 2010 e vede coinvolti, uno diverso per ogni serata, sette Ristoranti selezionati nel girolago compreso tra i comuni di Stresa e Cannobio (VB).

2010... il Gardon è servito!

Il piatto in gara appositamente prescelto per la prima edizione è a base di pesce e nella fattispecie Rutilus Rutilus, detto comunemente Gardon.Il Gardon è un pesce tipico lacustre e di piccoli corsi d’acqua che vive in grandi gruppi lungo le rive dei laghi nascosto tra la fitta vegetazione acquatica ed è molto apprezzato per le sue carni paricolarmente gus tose e delicate.

Rant #364: Boo To You Too

Halloween is coming up this Sunday.

Boy, do I remember the Halloweens of my youth.

Living in a place known as Rochdale Village--with 20 buildings and thousands of apartments--Halloween was more treat than trick for us. We would start at our building, go from floor to floor, apartment to apartment, and have full bags, and then we would move over to the next building, go from apartment to apartment, get full bags ...

Heck, I didn't even eat the candy--I gave it to my sister. It was the fun and thrill of getting candy, mixed with a few pennies thrown in for good measure.

And boy, was it fun.

In those days, you would have the occasional creep who would give you something that could hurt you. I remember my sister got an apple with pins in it. We knew exactly who gave it to her--an old lady--but in those days, you didn't do anything about it. You just threw it out and moved on to the next thing.

It was so much fun.

Until some other types of creeps would mug you in the hallway for your candy.

Yes, this did happen. It took the fun out of Halloween for me, and by the age of 13, I was done trick or treating.

I remember the last year we lived in the development, some girls, after receiving candy from us, threw an apple at our door.

And a very nice splatter it made.

Today, Halloween is much more controlled. Parents walk with their kids, and by and large, only go to houses where they know the family. Thus, we only get a couple of trick or treaters, even though we have lots of candy.

Their loss, I guess.

But also, the holiday has become such a corporate one. Millions of dollars each year are spent on costumes, candy and decorations.

It's just not the same holiday that we had when we were kids. Sure, there were costumes, but we basically winged it, and it was so much more fun.

And I just don't think it is as good a holiday today as we it was when we were kids.

Like I said, we would get the occasional rotten treat, but generally, people were very nice. It was a real kids' holiday, which it isn't anymore.

And that really is a shame, isn't it?

Basket-mania nel nuovo Centro “Stresa Minibasket”. Già in 40 agli allenamenti il martedì e giovedì

Dopo quella che si può definire una pausa riflessiva, o se vogliamo un anno sabbatico, ci rimettiamo in gioco, e lo facciamo come meglio non avremmo potuto sperare. In questi mesi, infatti, abbiamo lavorato per realizzare un grande progetto: l'istituzione del Centro “Stresa Minibasket”(Facebook link). E' questo un grande ed ambito traguardo, ma per noi che vediamo i traguardi come dei punti di osservazione privilegiati per scrutare nuove mete all'orizzonte, ecco l'occasione per crescere e migliorare insieme a tutti i bambini e le bambine che
parteciperanno al nostro progetto.

L'iniziativa è ormai in fase operativa e completamente avviata. Il martedì e il giovedì dalle 17.30 si terranno i corsi di minibasket per i bambini e le bambine nate dal 1999 al 2005 compresi. La prima ora è dedicata ai più piccoli e la seconda per i più grandi. La sede dei corsi è la ormai per noi storica palestra delle scuole medie C. Rebora, in viale Virgilio a Stresa. I tecnici che seguiranno i ragazzi sono Alberto De Giovannini e Ivana Gianuzzi con anche la collaborazione di tecnici della Azzurra Basket VCO (società satellite della Fulgor Omegna che si occupa esclusivamente del settore giovanile), il Dirigente Responsabile del settore Minibasket è Alberto Ferrari. La collaborazione con Azzurra Basket VCO è forse uno dei tasselli su cui vale la pena soffermarci, pur mantenendo la nostra autonomia ed identità, ci offre l'opportunità di avere un utile appoggio tecnico ed organizzativo, una sorta di economia di scala, e sopratutto ci consente di garantire ai ragazzi continuità sportiva ed agonistica in futuro.

Siamo infatti consapevoli che quasi sempre ciò che più penalizza piccole realtà come la nostra è l'impossibilità, mano a mano che i ragazzi crescono ed entrano nel settore agonistico, di offrire loro una squadra in cui giocare. E' impensabile per una realtà come Stresa credere che sia possibile organizzare numerose squadre per coprire ogni categoria di età, per il semplice fatto che non c'è un numero sufficiente di ragazzi per fascia d'età. La collaborazione consente quindi di unire le forze con le altre associazioni aderenti al progetto Azzurra Basket VCO (Fulgor Omegna, Virtus Verbania, Incontro Gravellona) e quindi dare l'opportunità ai ragazzi che lo desiderassero di proseguire con l'attività avviata attraverso il Minibasket.

Forte è il desiderio di costruire anche una solida base per il futuro, quindi oltre ai giocatori (anima e patrimonio di una associazione sportiva) occorrono anche i tecnici, è quindi in programma la partecipazione assidua ai corsi federali di Istruttore Minibasket e di Allenatori ed il continuo aggiornamento degli stessi (già tre nostri rappresentanti hanno partecipato al corso tenuto dal comitato provinciale di Varese) Visti i tempi duri particolare attenzione l'abbiamo posta all'aspetto economico, la quota di partecipazione ai corsi è stata fissata in 200 euro, con una particolare politica a favore delle famiglie più numerose (150 euro per il secondo fratello iscritto e 100 per il terzo e successivi).

A braccetto con il centro minibasket c'è l'iniziativa minibasket a scuola: Ivana sta tenendo, presso le scuole elementari di Stresa, delle sedute di gioco-allenamento dimostrative in collaborazione con gli insegnanti, al fine di far provare a quanti più bambini possibile il nostro sport. Compiamo 15 anni ma ci sentiamo decisamente “maggiorenni”! A completamento di tutto ciò siamo riusciti a riprendere il discorso anche nel settore agonistico senior, ed infatti la stagione ci vedrà partecipare al campionato federale di prima divisione maschile, con una rappresentativa che in prima battuta sembra essere piuttosto competitiva. (lunedì e venerdì alle 21 gli allenamenti per chi fosse interessato).

Vogliamo infine ricordare anche il torneo estivo 3 contro 3 “Stresa Basket 3on3” che ormai è una tappa obbligata per tutti i giocatori locali: la partecipazione è costante e numerosa (sempre oltre 20 squadre), il livello molto alto, e i progetti ambiziosi. Giunti alla settima edizione stiamo pensando di migliorare quantomeno la location (bello sarebbe il lungo lago) e modificare leggermente la formula per far fronte alle numerose richieste di partecipazione. C'è anche l'idea di un vero e proprio circuito di “Street Basket” collaborando con altre società sportive rivierasche, ma questo per il momento è solo un embrione d'idea! Un coinvolgimento quindi a tutto tondo e per tutto l'anno per tutti coloro che desiderano vivere la pallacanestro fino in fondo.

Stresa: Libri e divertimento alla caccia al tesoro nel mondo di Guardalà

Tanto entusiasmo ha scaturito la caccia al tesoro riservata agli studenti delle classi quarte e quinte dell'istituto elementare di Stresa organizzata dai volontari dell'Associazione Amici della Croce Rossa e del Locale Comitato della Croce Rossa Italiana improntata sull'opera letteraria “I Pipistrelli di Guardalà “ . Con oggi ha avuto termine la fase di lettura del testo svolta in classe e dall'attività di gioco è scaturita la forte attenzione dei bambini nei confronti dei personaggi e delle loro avventure. Aiutati dalle maestre e da uno stuolo di
volontari, per l'occasione alati, i bambini hanno risolto indovinelli, cercato indizi negli anfratti più suggestivi del centro città il tutto sotto l'occhio attento di Stefano Fornara e Mario Gamba autori del libro ed interessati da una tale applicazione del loro lavoro.

Proprio gli autori sono stati i giudici ultimi della caccia decretando i vincitori ai quali sono state consegnate copie di atlanti che andranno ad arricchire la biblioteca della scuola.
Al termine ha raggiunto l'allegra compagnia anche il Sindaco di Stresa che si è prestato allo scambio di chiavi con il Sindaco di Guardalà interpretato, per l'occasione da Stefano Fornara. Il pomeriggio si è concluso con la distribuzione della merenda a base di pane e “ Nutella “ ospitata sotto un gazebo trasformato in castello dalla fantasia dei volontari stresiani. L'iniziativa ha incassato il plauso delle insegnati e degli autori che entusiasti del risultato ottenuto parleranno dell'evento ad Ancona in occasione della prossima presentazione del libro. Dopo gli studenti intermedi ora toccherà ai più grandicelli cimentarsi nella lettura e prossimamente dar vita all'incontro con gli autori parte terminale di tutto il progetto. .

Mount Everest gets 3G mobile network

On Thursday, the world's highest third generation (3G) mobile network services base station was set up at the bottom of Mount Everest.

Ncell, a mobile phone and internet operator in Nepal, said it set up a 3G base at an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,000 feet) near the village of Gorakshep, according to Aigars Benders, the chief technical officer of Ncell. "The speed of the 3G services will be up to 3.6 MB per second," Aigars said. "But we could have it up to 7.2 MB if there is demand."

A total of nine stations, with the lowest at 2,870 meters (9,400 feet) at Lukla where the airport in the Everest region is situated, came into operation on Thursday.

The service is mainly aimed at the approximately 30,000 tourists who come to trek in Nepal's Himalayan region every year.

A few hundred mountaineers attempt to climb Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain at 8,848 meters (29,028 feet) and it is estimated that the annual total number of mountaineers in the region number several hundred. Although Ncell has not tested its 3G services from the top of Everest, Aigars said it is theoretically possible.

Four of the base stations are run by solar power with a back-up battery that can power the stations for up to three days.

Sweden-based Teliasonera, the fifth largest mobile company in Europe, has the controlling and operating stake in Ncell.

"Teliasonera also has the world's lowest 3G base station in the world," said Teliasonera's CEO Lars Nyberg. He said that the lowest one is at 1,400 meters (4,595 feet) below sea level in a mine in Europe.

Acqua gratis a Stresa con la prima «casa dell’acqua» del Vco, l’alternativa pubblica alle bottiglie in plastica

Sorgerà qui a Stresa la prima «casa dell’acqua» della provincia del Verbano Cusio Ossola. Sarà in grado di fornire, gratis, acqua depurata proveniente dall’acquedotto della cittadina lacuale. A farsi promotore dell’iniziativa è il Lions club Verbano Borromeo che ha subito trovato l’adesione dell’amministrazione guidata dal sindaco Canio Di Milia. L’obiettivo è promuovere il consumo di acqua del rubinetto, controllata e gratuita, in alternativa alle acque minerali in bottiglia. Un «rubinetto» pubblico al quale tutti potranno attingere acqua naturale ma anche gasata come si faceva una volta con le «vedovelle», le fontane in ghisa presenti in paesi e città.
In altre parti d’Italia la «casa dell’acqua» è già realtà. E presto lo sarà anche a Stresa. «Vogliamo dare un impulso affinché l’acqua sia accessibile a tutti, gratuitamente nei bisogni primari.

Un’azione che nel contempo serva ad educare la popolazione sulla sua vitale importanza» spiega Domenico Degiovannini, presidente del Lions. Che aggiunge: «Il Vco ha questa fondamentale ricchezza da sfruttare per il benessere della collettività e una casa dell’acqua rappresenta per la nostra provincia un segnale di educazione ambientale ed ecologica».
L’impatto ecologico è notevole. Un impianto come quello previsto a Stresa eroga in media al mese 45 mila litri, risparmiando lo smaltimento di 30 mila bottiglie di pet, pari a 1200 chili di plastica. Questo eviterà l’emissione in atmosfera di 250 chili di anidride carbonica necessaria a produrre le bottiglie e 1150 chili di anidride per la loro movimentazione.

La «casa dell’acqua» sarà realizzata in piazza Sirtori, l’angolo alle spalle del Palazzo dei Congressi, a due passi dalla biblioteca. «Stiamo studiando con i nostri architetti la struttura che vogliamo si adatti nel migliore dei modi all’ambiente del lago» spiega Bruno Ronchi, socio del Lions club Verbano Borromeo. Le apparecchiature produttive saranno fornite da una ditta specializzata. L’inaugurazione è prevista la primavera prossima. «Devo ringraziare il Lions club per la disponibilità, ne siamo orgogliosi» dice il sindaco Di Milia. «E’ un’iniziativa che invita ad un uso responsabile dell’acqua potabile, che da noi è molto qualificata - dice - . Forniremo sia quella normale che quella gasata e penso potrà invogliare tutte le persone, ma soprattutto gli anziani, all’uso dell’acqua buona nel nostro acquedotto».
