Neil Etheridge Hit by Kuwaiti Fan with a Laser Pointer

Philippine Azkals goalkeeper Neil Etheridge was reportedly hit directed to his eyes using a laser pointer by a Kuwaiti fan to distract him during the first leg of the 2nd round in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier match last July 23 in Kuwait.

An Azkals source said Etheridge had difficulty focusing and rubbed his eyes because of the beam. A Filipino cameraman noticed the red track and reported it to FIFA officials.

The players were all talking about it,” said the source. “Neil was bothered by the light in his eyes but didn’t know what it was. Fans try to distract the goalkeeper by training a laser light on his eyes but it’s banned and European football officials are very strict about it. Those found beaming laser lights are brought out of the stadium. I don’t know if anyone was taken out in Kuwait. Someone joked that if they used laser lights in Kuwait, we’ll use flash lights in Manila.”
