Neo Rauch combines his background in German social realist painting with elements of surrealism. As in most socio-realist works, his characters are typically involved in some great struggle. But in his work awkwardness and uneasiness replace typical expressions of determination, and neither the struggle nor the reason for it is quickly apparent.
